What makes a good website?

Good Web Design, Pudsey Leeds West Yorkshire

When designing a website there are many things which make the website good and many things that could make the website not so good.

For the untrained eye the first thing to make the website good is how it looks. People automatically think the look of the site is the most important aspect, but like when making a cake the decoration is just the finishing touch to make the whole cake. A website is very similar and a lot of ingredients need adding to the site before the final look is added.

What about the content to the website? The content of a good website is a vital part, not only for the human audience, but for the search engine bots too. From a human point of view a website full of information about the chosen subject is excellent, for the bots hidden keywords and phrases about the chosen subject is vital if the website is ever going to be found within a search engine.

Do images play an important part? For the audience of the website the images play an important role, there is nothing more boring than a few thousand words with no images to break up the text, most viewers will often switch off and navigate away from the page before any text has been read. Just one important piece of information when adding an image to a website, Search engine bots can’t see images, so always add a description or title.

So what about hidden codes? The vital hidden codes are the key to a good website. All keywords, descriptions and meta tags have to be fully researched to ensure the keywords tie in with the content and what the webpage is all about. This is the only way you are going to reach your target audience if you are depending on the search engines to deliver traffic to your site.

Other areas that should never be over looked are links, visitors, pay per click advertising and regular updates.......... All add to a good website

Its Children in Need – Pudsey!

Pudsey Children in need 2010

I always know when it’s getting closer to Christmas when the Friday night in front of the television includes sitting and watching all the TV world pulling together and making millions for children in need, well it’s that time again!

The night always leave a huge question in my mind, why does the town of Pudsey never seem to get a mention? Pudsey Bear, the iconic figure of ‘Children in Needs, was born in Pudsey and this all seems to be forgotten in the media eye, or maybe they just don’t know....

Anyway the Children in Need night always coincides with the switch on of the Christmas lights in Pudsey and this year in no exception, Christmas is coming.....Yey!

Work wise we are still very busy, a number of Designs for a local magazine, a new website order and CAD designing, not to mention the huge amount of designs we currently have on the table......

What’s going on this week or this month?

It’s going to be fireworks, sticky toffee and parking in the JMP Design world for the next few days and this year is flying by, it only seems 2 minutes ago when we were packing things away after Christmas, and we’re almost there again.

It’s been a while since our last blog, but work has continued never the less. A number of late nights to meet deadlines and a weekend or two to help with the workload, but all is Rosie.

Work has finished on the AGL Surveys website (www.agl-surveys.co.uk) and the site is up and running with a couple of new pages. The search engine optimisation project continues, but we are already seeing the results we expected with the local searches, the site is even hitting 1st on Google on a couple of key phases.

The Lawns Park Primary School Learning Platform is also seeing the final furlong with only a handful of modifications and tweaks, the site should be fully operational within the next 2 weeks. Training sessions with the staff of the school have also started and the feedback is excellent.

Still as one project comes to a close another project is just about to start.

We’re not a big company, but is that a bad thing?

I had a strange conversation this week with a company enquiring about our services and ultimately the company wanted to move their website management to JMP Design. On informing their current website management company, they responded with,” JMP Design are smaller than our company and you would be taking a step backwards by using their services”.

Not only did this make me laugh, but it made me feel a little disappointed by people perception of a company’s size to the quality of service they can offer.

I see a smaller company to be a benefit to the customer, the customer get to speak directly to the person that will actually be doing the work, building up a relationship throughout the project. From a designer’s point of view you get to learn about the customer, what they like and what they don’t like, this makes a reflection in the product you deliver.

Larger companies operate slightly different; the customer rarely gets to speak beyond the sales person, hearing the things they want to hear. At JMP Design the customer deals with the same person from day one, sales, design, delivery and support are all dealt with by the same person and that person knows you and you know them.

In our eyes a smaller company can also be a lot more competitive due to the fact that they don’t have so many overheads as a larger business, the sales team, the flashy office and car, the secretary and the admin clerk, all cost money to have and this will make a huge reflection on the quotation.

Regarding quality of work, we all have the same qualifications, similar experience and have worked on plenty of websites to know what we are doing and how to do it.

It’s simple to me, for a personal service and a better price a smaller company is in the driving seat.
